My wife and I have been picking up rotten fruit for a couple of weeks now and it dawned on us yesterday that maybe we should make something out of the fruit that hasn't met it's demise with the ground. Enter the Upside Down Pecan Plum Pie recipe we tried yesterday as a result of all of the plums that we have been patiently waiting to pick the last couple of months. This recipe seemed very scrumptious to me, and from the look of the pie fresh out of the oven (see above picture) I was thinking this could be a good one. Sometimes looks can be deceiving, this wasn't an exception to that rule, and you realize that something that looks good to eat could be poisonous or even worse tastes like.... well you know. My wife, as usual, did a stand up job on the crust and I tell you those pecans with the sugary stuff on them were quite tasty, but that's where the goodness ends and the not so tasty bits begin. I would say that this pie's filling tastes a lot like pureed prunes. I actually was a little worried that it may give us the runs to tell you the truth. I wouldn't recommend this one unless you really like prunes and even then I think it's a stretch.
I couldn't help but think that an apple filling or even a pumpkin filling could really make this a great recipe. We may have to revisit this recipe around the holidays!! Oh, on a side note I just picked the apples this weekend so stay tuned on apple pressing and hard apple cider making in the next couple of weeks.
